The City of Sydney local government area covers the city centre and surrounding inner-city suburbs. We acknowledge the Gadigal people of the Eora nation as the Traditional Custodians of our local area.
Our sustainability targets are bold. We’re aiming to reach net zero emissions across our local area by 2035. In our own operations we’re aiming to cut emissions by 80% from 2006 levels by June 2025, without offsets. In 2020 we began buying 100% renewable electricity for all our operations and we’ve been certified carbon neutral since 2011.
Our communities are engaged and they support climate action. Many of our residents and businesses are helping to meet our targets through our Better Buildings Partnership, Sustainable Destination Partnership, CitySwitch and Smart Green Apartments programs.
In 2019 we joined a growing number of cities globally declaring a climate emergency. We acknowledge the urgency of acting on climate change and the opportunities it can bring.
We participate in many international and local climate and sustainability organisations and we joined the Infrastructure Sustainability Council in 2023.
