About
From its inception, GECA was built with a strong role to combat greenwash, to minimise the environmental, health and social impacts in the built environment and create sustainable communities.
Our transparent certification program develops standard against which products and services can be independently audited. Standards are developed following ISO 14024 principles for world best practice in ecolabelling.
GECA is Australia’s only independent, not for profit, multi sector ecolabelling program and the only Australian member of the Global Ecolabelling Network (GEN).
Since year 2000, our services and ecolabel has provided building professionals, architects, procurement professionals, and consumers with an independent, reliable and credible way to make environmentally preferred choices and is widely recognised by government agencies and green building schemes globally, including the ISCA IS program.
Sustainability Outcomes
GECA certified products may directly contribute to points in the credit “Sustainability Labelled Products” (Rso-7 ISv2.0; “Environmentally Labelled Products and Supply Chains” Mat-2 ISv1.2). GECA certified cement and concrete products ensure reduced carbon emissions compared to average cement (“Energy and Carbon Reduction” Ene-1 v2; “Material Life Cycle Impact Measure and Management” Rso-6 v2; “Materials Footprint Measurement and Reduction” Mat-1 v1.2). Certain credits are indirectly influenced by GECA products: Manufacturers of GECA certified products have to comply with high sustainability standards and so it will be easier to prove suppliers’ compliance with contractual sustainability requirements (“Contract and Supplier Management”, Spr-3) and sustainability risks are less likely (“Supplier Assessment and Selection”, Spr-2). (Relevant credits in version v1.2: “Commitment to Sustainable Procurement” Pro-1; “Identification of Suppliers” Pro-2; “Managing Supplier Performance” Pro-4). Products certified under the GECA “Environmentally Innovative Products” standard may contribute to the “Innovation” (Inn-1 ISv2.0/ISv1.2) credit. GECA certified products must comply with resource efficiency measures and so may contribute to a Resource Efficiency Action Plan (“Resource Strategy Development”, ISv2.0 Rso-1).
