The importance of infrastructure sustainability in creating long term, high performing assets and the need to embed sustainability early in projects were amongst the topics discussed at a breakfast networking event for Infrastructure Sustainability Council of Australia (ISCA) accredited professionals hosted by AECOM’s Katrina O’Mara.

ISCA CEO Antony Sprigg gave an overview of new projects recently awarded IS ratings and an update on tool developments to around 30 industry professionals. Participants included representatives from Main Roads WA, Fremantle Ports, Leighton Contractors, URS, GHD, John Holland and the City of Stirling.

Antony also spoke about the growth of the IS rating scheme and future overseas developments.

“IS has achieved traction across Australia, in both the private sector, and across Federal, State and Local Government stakeholders and is now attracting international attention. There are currently three IS pilot trials running in New Zealand and interest from Indonesia and Malaysia.” Antony said.

Katrina shared her experience and highlights of the recent ICSA conference, including sessions on the cost of obtaining ratings and the savings realised. She emphasised the need for ICSA members to quantify the benefits and saving achieved by using the scheme to encourage further adoption.

“It’s important for us to provide examples showing why the scheme is important and the benefits, including cost savings that can be gained by participating,” Katrina said.

In encouraging potential use of the IS rating scheme Katrina raised the importance of embedding the scheme early in a project.

“If you’re thinking of using the IS rating scheme it’s never too early to start planning and make sure you document everything from the beginning,” Katrina advised.
